Kanoldt, Alexander
1881 Karlsruhe - 1939 Berlin
1899-1901, attends the Karlsruhe School of Applied Arts. 1901-06, trains at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art, interrupted by one year as a volunteer soldier in Rastatt. 1908, meets Kandinsky and Jawlensky. Influenced by this meeting he moves to Munich in 1909. Founder member and secretary of the “Neue Künstlervereinigung München“ [New Artists’ Association]. Paints first cubist pictures in 1911. 1914-18, war service. After engagement with “Pittura metafisica” develops a neo-realist pictorial language. 1925, takes part in the “Neue Sachlichkeit” exhibition in the Mannheim Kunsthalle. From 1925 professor at the Breslau Academy of Art. 1927, co-founder of the “Badische Sezession”. 1931, moves to Garmisch and opens a private painting school. 1932, joins the National Socialist Party, 1933, Director of the State School of Art in Berlin-Schöneberg and senator in the Prussian Academy of Arts. Berlin, 1935, protests against defamatory attacks against artists. 1936, resigns from the State School of Art. 1937, confiscation of 17 of his works in German museums. Kanoldt dies on 24 January 1939 in Berlin.
