1891 Karlsruhe - 1979 Karlsruhe

1908-12, trains at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art under Walter Georgi. 1912-14, attends the Teaching Institute of the Museum of Applied Arts in Berlin, under Emil Orlik. George Grosz and Oskar Nerlinger are fellow pupils. 1914-18, war service. 1920-22, as a master class pupil returns to Karlsruhe Academy to study etching under Walter Conz. 1924, teaching assistant at the Karlsruhe Academy. 1925, director of a drawing class. 1925-33, professor at the Karlsruhe Academy and director of a painting class. 1925, takes part in the “Neue Sachlichkeit” exhibition at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. 1929, contributes to the Amsterdam “Neue Sachlichkeit” exhibition. From 1933 forbidden to teach or exhibit. From 1939 works for the Karlsruhe Majolica Factory and as a painter of clock faces in the Black Forest. 1947, teaches in the Department of Architecture at Karlsruhe Technical College. 1947/48, recalled as professor of painting at the Karlsruhe Academy. 1959, silver medal at the International Competition for Peace in Leipzig. 1961, Hans-Thoma Prize of the Land Baden-Württemberg. 1965, guest of honour at the Villa Massimo in Rome. Progressive blindness causes him to cease work in the 1970s. Hubbuch dies on 26 December 1979 in Karlsruhe.
