Edle von Hoeßle, Sonja

German paintress, born 1960 in Wiesbaden

Sonja Edle von Hoeßle, born 1960 in Wiesbaden, studied Creative Visual Communication at the colleges of Mainz and Würzburg and received her diploma in 1993. Three years later she won the Novices’ Prize of the Bavarian Ministry of Science, Research and Art. From 1998 to 1999, she received a grant for her studio from the Bavarian Culture Fund. In the following year she founds the “Riedenheim Project” together with Herbert Mehler. In 2003 she was awarded a prize for Promotion of the Arts by the city of Würzburg. Many of her works are owned publicly. Since 1996 she has regularly participated in national and international exhibitions.

Sonja Edle von Hoeßle does not work in the traditional style of painting. She does not work with ordinary paintbrushes, but with pallet knives, rollers, spatulas and scrapers. She applies coat after coat to then remove these with the tools mentioned. Lower layers become visible, the roughness is increased, and a relief-like work of art with vibrant colours is created. Her work is not to be compared to any natural model. In her work the four elements fire, water, air and earth are combined. Her art is about invented topographies, utopian landscapes without concrete setting, places for inspiration.
