Schnarrenberger, Wilhelm
1892 Buchen/Odenwald - 1966 Karlsruhe
1905, his family moves to Freiburg/Breisgau. 1911, Abitur examination. 1911-16, trains at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich under Spiess, Wirnher and Ehmcke. 1912-14, studying architecture with Wölfflin in Munich. 1916, first exhibition in Munich. 1916-18, war service. 1919, attends the School of Applied Arts in Munich. Until 1920, working as independent artist in Munich. 1921, professor at the Badische School of Art Karlsruhe. In the same year he marries Friederike Strauss. 1924, with Hans Wingler founds the “ORNA” workshops. 1925, takes part in the “Neue Sachlichkeit” exhibition in Mannheim. 1927, divorces and travels to Paris. 1932, travels in Italy. 1933, dismissed from his teaching post. Moves to Berlin and works as independent commercial artist. 1934-35 stays at Villa Massimo in Rome. 1938, running a small hotel in Lenzkirch with his second wife Melita Auwärter. 1943, divorces. 1947, appointed professor at the Karlsruhe Academy of Art. 1948, moves to Karlsruhe. 1950, third marriage to Michaela Aust. 1951, member of the “Badische Sezession”. 1957, made emeritus professor and travels to Paris. 1958, appointed to the “Council of Ten” of the Artists’ Federation. 1962, Hans-Thoma Prize. 1965, guest of honour at the Villa Massimo. Schnarrenberger dies on 17 April 1966 in Karlsruhe.
