1889 Munich - 1938 Berlin

1902-12, trains and works as a baker/confectioner. Self-taught as a painter. 1913, living in the Fonata-Martini artists’ colony in Switzerland. 1914-15, war service. 1915, moves to Berlin. 1916, first oil paintings. Exhibition in Herwarth Walden’s “Der Sturm” gallery. 1917, marries Maria Uhden. His wife dies giving birth to their son. 1919, member of the “Novembergruppe”. 1920, first one-man exhibition with Goltz. 1921, joins the “Neue Sezession”. 1922, in Italy, engagement with “Pittura metafisica”. 1924, Carlo Carrà publishes a monograph on Schrimpf. 1925, contributes 12 works to the “Neue Sachlichkeit” exhibition in Mannheim. Professor at the School for Decorative Art in Munich. Further exhibitions. May 1933, stays at the Deutsche Akademie in Rome. October 1933, appointed to teaching post at the College for Art Education at Berlin-Schöneberg, made extraordinary professor. In 1937 Rudolf Hess causes a picture by Schrimpf dating from 1915 to be removed from the “Entartete Kunst” [degenerate art] exhibition. Dismissed from his teaching post at the end of 1937. Schrimpf dies on April 1938 in Berlin.
